Lion Tracking Experience – Queen Elizabeth National Park

Lion tracking in Queen Elizabeth National Park is a unique guided wildlife experience that allows visitors to accompany trained Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and researchers in locating and observing lions—and occasionally leopards—in their natural habitat. Unlike a regular game drive, this activity focuses on tracking specific lion prides, often with the help of radio-collared lions, providing deep insight into their behavior, movements, hunting strategies, and social structure.

The experience is conducted mainly in the open Kasenyi Plains, one of the park’s prime predator areas. Lion tracking combines adventure with conservation, as your participation directly supports ongoing research and protection of Queen Elizabeth National Park’s lion and leopard populations.

Trip Schedule
Your safari begins early in the morning with a 6:00 AM pick-up by your professional guide from Trek Rwenzori Tours, from your hotel in Fort Portal, Kasese, or within the Queen Elizabeth area. You will then be driven to the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices for registration, briefing, and final preparations.

Lion tracking starts at 7:00–7:30 AM and continues until mid-day. Along the way, you may encounter other wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, warthogs, and a wide variety of bird species.

In the afternoon, the experience continues with a scenic boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, famous for its dense population of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and abundant birdlife.
