OVERVIEW

​

Embark on an unforgettable 3-day gorilla trekking and cultural adventure in southwestern Uganda, travelling from Kampala or Entebbe to the ancient rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

​

This carefully designed short safari combines two of Uganda's most remarkable experiences: tracking endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat and discovering the cultural heritage of the Batwa people.

​

Your journey takes you through the changing landscapes of Uganda, from the busy urban environment around Kampala and Entebbe to the green countryside, rolling hills and dramatic highlands of southwestern Uganda.

​

The highlight of the trip is a guided gorilla trek in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi, where you enter the rainforest in search of a habituated gorilla family. After the trek, the experience continues with a meaningful Batwa cultural encounter, offering insight into the traditions, history and relationship with the forest of one of the region's Indigenous communities.

Accommodation is provided on a full-board basis at either Rushaga Gorilla Lodge or Gorilla Bluff Lodge, subject to availability.

DAY 1: KAMPALA OR ENTEBBE – BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

 

Your safari begins with a private pickup from your hotel, residence or preferred location in Kampala or Entebbe.

Meet your professional driver-guide and begin the journey towards southwestern Uganda. As you leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes to open countryside, agricultural communities and beautiful rolling hills.

The journey provides an opportunity to experience Uganda beyond its major towns, passing through local communities and rural landscapes as you make your way towards the Bwindi region.

Continue towards the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where your accommodation will be located conveniently for the following day's gorilla trek.

​

Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and settle into your room. The remainder of the day is dedicated to relaxation and preparation for the following morning's gorilla trekking adventure.

​

Your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the trek, including appropriate clothing, what to carry and general forest etiquette.

DAY 2: GORILLA TREKKING & BATWA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

​

After breakfast, prepare for the main highlight of your safari: mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

​

Proceed to the designated gorilla trekking briefing point in the Rushaga sector, where you will meet the park guides and receive instructions before entering the forest.

Begin your trek into Bwindi's ancient rainforest accompanied by trained park guides and trackers.

The forest offers a remarkable environment of towering trees, thick vegetation, vines, ferns and diverse wildlife. As you walk along the forest trails, your guides and trackers will follow signs of the gorilla family's movements to determine their location.

The duration and difficulty of the trek can vary considerably because mountain gorillas live freely in their natural habitat. Depending on their location and movements, the trek may involve uneven, steep or muddy forest trails.

When the gorilla family is located, you will have the opportunity to observe these magnificent animals as they interact, feed, rest and move through their natural environment.

​

This is more than simply a wildlife encounter. It is an opportunity to witness one of the world's most extraordinary conservation success stories while experiencing the atmosphere of one of Africa's oldest rainforest ecosystems.

After completing the trek, return from the forest and travel back to your lodge for lunch and time to rest.

Batwa Cultural Experience

Later in the day, continue to a Batwa cultural experience hosted by members of the local community.

The Batwa have a deep historical connection with the forests of the Great Lakes region. During the experience, local community members share aspects of their cultural heritage and traditional knowledge.

You may learn about:

• Traditional forest knowledge

• Medicinal plants and their traditional uses

• Traditional food gathering

• Hunting and survival traditions

• Storytelling and oral history

• Traditional songs and dances

• The historical relationship between the Batwa and the forest

• Contemporary Batwa community life

The experience provides a respectful opportunity to meet members of the community, listen to their stories and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage surrounding Bwindi.

After the cultural experience, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: TRANSFER FROM BWINDI  TO KAMPALA

​

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge before checking out and beginning your return journey to Kampala.

Travel back through the scenic countryside of southwestern Uganda, passing through rural communities, cultivated hills and changing landscapes.

​

There will be opportunities for a lunch stop and refreshments during the journey.

Continue towards Kampala, arriving at your preferred drop-off location. Your guide will assist you with your luggage before bringing your 3-day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience to an end.

RESPONSIBLE GORILLA TOURISM

Your gorilla trekking experience contributes to the conservation of Uganda's mountain gorillas and supports communities living around Bwindi.

Visitors are expected to follow the instructions of the Uganda Wildlife Authority guides and maintain responsible behaviour around the gorillas. These measures help protect both visitors and the gorillas while supporting long-term conservation.

The Batwa cultural experience also provides an opportunity for visitors to engage directly with the local community and contribute to community-based tourism.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Gorilla trekking permits are limited and should be booked well in advance, particularly during periods of high demand.

The Rushaga sector is the planned trekking location for this itinerary. The final accommodation and trekking arrangements are confirmed according to permit availability and the operational requirements of the park.

The duration and physical difficulty of the gorilla trek cannot be guaranteed in advance because the gorillas move naturally through the forest.
